Update on Baby Whelehon

My due date is February 25, so we are in the home stretch now...only four more weeks to go...or so we thought, until today.

I had my last ultrasound this morning at St. Anthony's to get some last measurements on Baby Whelehon.

My appointment was at 11 a.m., so I got there at 10:45 a.m. I did not get seen until 11:45 a.m., almost 45 minutes after my appointment was scheduled. That's right. I waited in the waiting room for an hour. (Please refer back to this post as to reason #90809820398490 why I will not be delivering at St. Anthony's. Ever.)

Did I mention that I was doing this during my plan period/lunch break from work? I got out of school at 10:24 a.m. and had to be back no later than 12:30 for my last class of the day.

I was STARVING. The plan was to have my appointment and then go get lunch together at the Bread Co across the street from the hospital. It occurred to me that that wasn't happening any longer, and I had no idea how I was going to eat. Drew went down to the cafeteria and brought me back a wrap, which I promptly devoured in the waiting room. Honey badger don't care.

And after we got into our ultrasound room, I was told some rather surprising news: While I should be measuring at 36 weeks, I am really measuring a little over 38 weeks. I am measuring over two weeks ahead of what I should be. The baby is almost 8 pounds, and it's head is already measuring 10 cm. For those of you who are not familiar with labor, you start pushing when you are dilated to 10 cm- if this baby get any bigger, I will physically not be able to push this baby out naturally.

The baby is also head down and is so far down that the doctor thinks that I can go into labor at any day. MAJOR FREAK OUT HERE.

I asked the doctor if there was a reason why the baby was measuring so large. (Translation: is the baby fat because of how much I have been eating?) The doctor said that the baby isn't fat- it is just big. Apparently there is a difference. So I'm carrying a hockey player in there? I'm okay with that.

The doctor said that it usually is genetic- if either parent was a big baby, chances are, you will have a big baby. Well, I was a little over six pounds, so it wasn't me! Then I remembered- Drew's mom was an 11 pound baby...

I was upset because I interpreted this as meaning that I would in all likelihood not have a natural birth. Drew tried to comfort me:

Drew: "My mom was 11 pounds and she was born naturally. But she also had older siblings, so the roads were already paved by the time she came."

Thank you for reminder #9840928309483920 of why I married this man.

And now I leave you with creepy baby from my Lamaze class last night:

  1. Oh my god! Baby Wheels could come any day, WHHOAA! Good thing you have many things done, my dear. If you need help with anything at all around the house (bathtub still need scrubbing? Call me!) I am here to help. And don't worry about the head - babies skulls are kind of squishy and not to mention, those measurements aren't 100% accurate, so I bet your little one will stay inside for a little while and won't be so big afterall. :) I am getting so psyched for you!!!!!!
