I don't care if this isn't classy, but I am airing out my financial headache on here.
So I have been obsessing over every last penny and nickle lately because a) I just graduated and have to pay off student loans and b) we have a wedding in 11 months that is going to cost a bajillion dollars.
I have been paying off my student loans a little bit each month as I have been going to school (technically they were in deferment, but I wanted to get a head start). I just sat down and added up everything that I owe to NelNet, Sallie Mae, and Mohela...and it comes to a grand total of $15,137.
Jesus H. Christ.
I am not used to being in debt. Granted, it could be a lot more than that, and I know plenty of people who are in way over their heads. I have pretty much vowed to hold off getting my second Masters and/or PhD until that debt is paid off.
My car will be paid off in May. I can't remember the exact amount I have left to pay off, but it is somewhere in the ballpark of about $3,500.
And I had to pay a whopping $650 to replace a broken ball joint on my car a few weeks ago. Ouch.
So what am I doing to try to pay off this debt?
1. I am working summer school. That should net me around $2,000 before taxes.
2. I am slated to receive a stipend for being the Academic Quiz Bowl coach next school year. I did it gratis for the first year, and the Athletics Supervisor is trying to find some $$$ to pay me.
3. I am signing up to sell tickets/supervise at all home games. It basically pays $30 a night for about three hours of work. I told the Athletics Supervisor to let me know when she had a list of games to sign up, because it is a first come, first serve basis and I need the $$$.
4. I have started proctoring ACT/SAT tests at Washington University with my future sister-in-law (thanks for giving me the heads up Sarah- I love being paid to read!) I got paid $80 to stay at Washington University a couple of weekends ago. I hope that there are future opportunities.
5. I have been looking for another part-time job. Summer school ends on July 1 and I just can't justify sitting on my ass until mid August, when school starts back up. I have my resume out for a few businesses, so we will see where that leads me. I am planning on possibly keeping it through the school year.
Any other ideas of how I can make some extra money to pay off my debts?
girl, i hear ya. money is the biggest stress in my life right now. or rather, not having enough. i, too, feel downright depressed when i consider my remaining school loans. i'll keep my eye out for ya if i hear anything.
